Place is a Minneapolis based charity whose primary aim is help design and develop sustainable developments. Me and Silvia Bartoli were approached by the directors of the charity with a very simple brief “we want a very engaging website with rich animated content”.
The core idea was to create a living and animated environment that the user could explore and discover. We decided to create a main navigation environment with access to different sections in different geographical locations. The showcase of Ventura’s “Wave”, their new development project was the key piece of the site. At the same time it needed to feel integrated into a bigger world where more project would be upcoming.
With this in mind we set out to create a animated and interactive horizontal scrolling panorama from coast to coast, where they key spots would open on overlay. For the section about Ventura we created a microcosmos of interaction and animations where the user could explore the different parts of the development, gather information and in general feel immersed in the environment.
The design and development of the website took few months and it allowed me to strengthen my programming skills using Object Oriented Actionscript 2 with Flash 8.
The reception of the website was very positive and we collaborated with place for the following years, extending the website, creating small flash games related to events. The website was featured on .net magazine in UK and on the WebSites2 book by Zeixs Books
